Cloud computing is the new mantra for the Enterprise users. After going through more than 79 technologies for its Hype cycle Report 2009 cloud computing has been named as the most sought after technology in the current trend. The Hype Cycle report provides information on key technologies and trends in a specific technology, topic, geographic region or industry domain. “Although cloud computing is about a very simple idea, consuming and delivering services from “the cloud,” there are many issues regarding types of cloud computing and scope of deployment that make the details not nearly so simple. In other words, it is a subject that is ripe for a Gartner Hype Cycle,” said the report. Technologies like cloud computing, e-books, internet TV, while social software and microblogging sites have tipped over the peak and will soon experience disillusionment among enterprise users,” said Jackie Fenn, Vice President, Gartner Fellow, Co-author, “Mastering the Hype Cycle”.
Virtual worlds and service-oriented architecture (SOA) are also among the probable for getting in the mainstream in the next five years. Fenn further said Longer term, beyond the five-year horizon, RFID, 3-D printing, context-delivery architectures, mobile robots, and human augmentation will be transformational across a range of industries, said Fenn.

Cloud Number Nine…!

“And there ain’t no place that I’d rather be
And we can’t go back but you’re here with me
Yeah, the weather is really fine – up on cloud number nine..!! “

-   thus crooned Bryan Adams and the song became a rage . And the weather is really going to be fine with “Cloud computing” becoming all the rage now .The next big trend – Cloud computing sounds all cloudy and fuzzy , but it’s not so fuzzy when you view the value proposition from the perspective of IT professionals.

Cloud computing comes into focus only when you think about what IT always needs: a way to increase capacity or add capabilities on the fly without investing in new infrastructure, training new personnel, or licensing new software. Cloud computing encompasses any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that, in real time over the Internet, extends IT’s existing capabilities.

Research shows that the aggregate reduction in electricity used by SaaS provider NetSuite and its customers is approximately 595 million kWh (kilowatt hours) per year — the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of more than 56,000 homes. This results in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by more than 423,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, the equivalent of:

* CO2 emissions produced by the consumption of more than 48 million gallons of gasoline
* CO2 emissions produced by the consumption of approximately 985,000 barrels of oil
* And the yearly pollution caused by more than 77,000 automobiles.

The core benefit of Cloud Computing is not about lower power consumption, but about a better automated business that’s able run more effectively. Being green is really just a by-product.Clearly, the benefits of cloud computing go well beyond any savings that can be made on the power bill from the datacenter. Indeed, the more effective IT is in support of manufacturing, distribution, and management of products, for instance, the more cloud computing provides a systemic value.Cloud computing has fewer computers serving more users; thus, power consumption goes down. Lower power consumption means fewer kilowatts from the coal plant, thus a better planet.
